Subject: June 2005 conference in Salt Lake City for Piatt, Pyatt, Pyeatt (and other spelling variants)

To all interested parties,
At this year's Piatt Researchers' Conference in Doylestown,
Pennsylvania, interest was expressed in holding the 2005 conference in
Salt Lake City. One of the advantages to meeting in Salt Lake City is
that it is possible to conduct research for locations all over the world
from a single physical location. I'm hoping that this might attract
other researchers from the Pyeatt (Arkansas) branch of the family who
have not joined us in the past.
Since I live in the vicinity, I was asked to organize the conference. I
was also asked to let people know details, especially financial ones, as
quickly as possible so that potential conference attendees could plan
their budget for next summer's conference.
Traditionally the conference is held the last full week of June, but
have been asked to consider moving the time schedule forward 1-2 weeks.
The University of Utah's school year ends the first of May, so I am not
anticipating any problems with our proposed schedule. So we are looking
at a one-week conference held June 5th-11th, June 12th-18th, or June
19th-25th.
As things currently stand, it looks like we will be able to stay in
University of Utah student housing. This year's prices were $24.50 per
person per night in a room designed for double occupancy-i.e., $147 for
the week (Sunday night through Friday night). The rate for a single
room is $29.50 per night or $177. We would be staying in housing that
was constructed to house the athletes who participated in the 2002
Winter Olympics and there is an on-campus cafeteria that would be open
to us.
The University of Utah campus is a short ride on either a bus or
light-rail transit system, so having access to a car isn't an absolute
necessity. For those who might prefer to bring a car, parking is $3 for
Family History Library patrons at the Plaza Hotel, which is right around
the corner from the Family History Library. Regular public parking is
$5 and you pay every time you enter the parking garage, but in addition
to the discount for FHL patrons, you also have the option of coming and
going throughout the day at no extra charge.
The Salt Lake City airport is about 10 minutes from downtown and 20
minutes from the University of Utah. Arrangements for transportation
between the airport and the University of Utah campus should be easily
to make.
The LDS Family History Library is in the heart of downtown Salt Lake
City. There are two malls within one block of the library, and a third
about 3 blocks away. There are numerous restaurants within walking
distance.
For those who are unfamiliar with Salt Lake City, we have a multiplicity
of art museums, professional acting and dancing companies. The library
is directly across the street from Temple Square where there is a summer
concert series with artists coming from all over the country, which is
free to the public. Organ recitals by the tabernacle organists are
usually held several days each week at noon. The Tabernacle Choir
practices are held on Thursday evenings and their weekly radio broadcast
on Sunday morning are all open to the public at no charge. Park City
and other venues are more familiarly associated with winter sports also
offer summer activities, such as concerts and outdoor sporting
activities. There are all kinds of scenic places to go-including Arches
National Park, Zion's National Park that are only a couple of hours
away.
I don't need to have confirmed reservations any time soon. But I wanted
to get some feel for the amount of interest people have in meeting here,
so that I have a better feel for numbers in my negotiations with the
University of Utah.
Please feel free to respond directly to me. I can be reached by e-mail
at .
Thanks to you all and I look forward to seeing you all next year!!
