Subject: More regarding the 2005 conference

After sending off the e-mail, I realized that I may have been more
exuberant in my phrasing than I should have. When we left Doylestown,
we had not made a firm commitment to hold the conference in Salt Lake
City, although there was a fair amount of interest. I was somewhat
tentative in offering to organize everything because I was afraid that I
wouldn't be able to find housing at a cost that was comparable to what
we've paid at previous conferences. So I left promising to check things
out and see how feasible it might be for us to hold the conference in
Salt Lake City before we made a final decision.

Having done a little research, it seems quite do-able and reasonably
priced. I'm already hearing from people who have been unable to attend
previous conferences and who would like to join us in Salt Lake for
2005. I have really enjoyed meeting with the Piatt's even though we
have to go all the way back to Jacob II before I can find a common
ancestor with any of the others. It has been wonderful to learn what
they know and what they surmise-and to hang out together as we've
pursued additional resources. I'm hoping that this conference may
attract some who spell their last name "Pyeatt" like I do! If a larger
group can convene, we may be able to make even greater progress.

After talking to someone from the University of Utah's student housing
this morning, I was assured that staying on campus would not be a
problem. She also quoted me prices that seemed to be in the same
ballpark as what we've paid at the other conferences I have attended.

Now that I have spoken with the Marci, the official person from the U,
it looks like we will be able to get a discounted price from this
morning's quote. The discounted price is $21.50 per night for a rooms
designed for double occupancy and $26.50 for a single-occupant room.
She also seemed to indicate that if our group was sufficiently large, we
might be able to negotiate an even lower price. As I stated previously,
we would be housed in a dorm designed with Olympic athletes and their
needs in mind-they are new and quite nice. Marci also indicated that we
shouldn't have any scheduling problems for the weeks we discussed. She
seemed to feel that we could still take a couple of months before having
to make a firm time commitment, but they are already booking groups for
next June.

Marci said that we could choose to have them provide all or some of our
meals-anything from breakfasts to box lunches to dinners. I explained
that we traditionally ate breakfast on campus and that we generally
patronized local restaurants for our other meals. She didn't seem to
feel that it would be a problem either way.

Unless the group decides otherwise, I am operating on the assumption
that we will be meeting in Salt Lake City. Personally, I believe that
Salt Lake has a lot to offer. For anyone who hasn't spent time in the
"new" Family History Library, it is a phenomenal research facility! At
the moment, they are remodeling which is scheduled to be completed next
month. They have open stacks, which means that you are free to browse
everything on the shelves. They also have computers with access to the
Internet & tables for people who bring laptops that also are wired with
access to the Internet. The FHL computers offer free access to
Ancestry.com. In addition to a fairly good print (i.e., book format)
collection, they also have a large microfilm collection. We would also
be close to libraries at the University of Utah and at BYU.

Yahoo!! I think this can be great!!!
