For Laura:

Volume 9 of the Piatt Family Newsletter, 1994, shows this couple as John Piatt, son of Jacob Piatt and Eleanor Allen, and Mary Truax, daughter of Isaac Truax and Rebecca _____.

PFN further shows:
John Piatt, b c 1841, Monroe Co OH; d 13 Feb 1897, near Cuba, Jackson Co WV; buried there
Mary Truax, b c 1847, Monroe Co OH; d 19 Jan 1916, near Woodsfield, Monroe Co OH; buried Gowdy Cemetery, Monroe Co OH. The couple was married in Woodsfield OH by Edward Salisbury on 22 Oct 1865.

In addition to the children of the 1880 census PFN states that there were three more:

Albert, b 11 Nov 1881, Jackson Co WV
Viola "Ola," b 10 Jun 1883, Jackson Co WV
Charles, b 11 May 1885

Obituaries collected by Mary Jane Piatt Nalley indicate there were yet two more:
a daughter who married Ralph Campbell
a daughter, Bessie, who married Mr Briggs

We believe the line of descent from the immigrant is:

.Rene Piatt and Elizabeth Sheffield (NJ)
..Jacob Piatt and Mary Hull (NJ, he to PA)
...Jacob Piatt and Jean Paul (PA)
....Jacob Piatt and Elizabeth Dunham (Washington Co PA)
.....James Piatt Sr and Nancy Coleman? (Monroe Co OH)
......John Piatt and Elizabeth Keezy (Monroe Co OH)
.......Jacob Piatt and Eleanor Allen (Monroe Co OH)
........John Piatt and Mary Truax (Monroe Co OH/Jackson Co WV)

A couple of years ago the Piatt Researchers group began a Piatt Surname DNA study. Rene Piatt is believed to have had several sons. We believe the Monroe Co OH Piatts descend from Rene through his oldest son Jacob. A group of men in our study (and not of Monroe Co OH) believe that they descend through another of Rene's sons, not Jacob. The DNA results show that our partcipant from the Monroe Co line is a 24/25 match to the others who feel they descend from a son other than Jacob. (Those participants are a perfect 25/25 match to each other as close as brothers at least by the 25 markers analyzed.) The DNA results give a strong indication that our participant through Jacob and the group of others have a common ancestor within the last 7 to 14 generations. Given the scarcity of the Piatt name in that time period and location, the probability is strong that the common ancestor was, indeed, Rene.

Even though it is a 24/25 match which occurs between our Monroe Co OH participant, it is a 2-step variation. That is, where our Monroe Co OH participant has a 9 on one of the 25 markers analyzed, the group has an 11. If there were another Piatt gentleman from the Monroe Co line who would like to join our surname study we could possibly determine if the 2-step variation occured after James Piatt Sr, the first of the Piatts in Monroe Co OH, or before him. Please pass the word on to Monroe Co folks that the Piatt Surname DNA study continues and is interested in new particpants. (By the way, our Monroe Co OH particpant already in the study does not live in Monroe Co.)

Researching Piatts in Jackson Co WV can be difficult in that Piatts from another branch lived there at the same time and used the same given names. These other Piatts descend from William Peatt and Mary Smith of Nicholas Co WV. A descendant of William Peatt has joined our DNA study and been analyzed as a 25/25 match to the group who thinks they descend from Rene but not by oldest son Jacob. So the conclusion can be drawn that the two branches of Piatts in Jackson Co WV are distant cousins.

Lister and website keeper Robin Pyatt Bellamy is the expert on Jackson Co WV Piatts.

In Ohio the Piatt Family Newletter can be found in its entire 12 volumes in libraries in Woodsfield, Monroe Co; Marietta, Washington Co; Toledo, Lucas Co; and Ohio Genealogical Society in Mansfield, Richland Co. It is also at the Allen Co Public Library in Fort Wayne IN as well as a few other libraries around the country. Anyone wanting to obtain a volume for their own library can contact me for details.

Hope this helps.
