For Robin:
There are yet more Lorenzo Piatts than we had thought. I've been browsing Heritage Quest census records online--1860, 1870, 1890 what there is of it, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930. Heritage Quest does not have 1850 and the 1880 at familysearch.org is unavailable for maintenance. But here is what I found:
1860 Otsego Co NY, Cherry Valley Twp
William O Kinney, 21, harnessmaker, NY
Amanda, 21, housekeeping, NY
Ella, 10/12, NY
EDSON PEATT, 23, harnessmaker junr(?), NY
Darius Huyke?, 19, harnessmaker junr(?), NY
Also on the same page in the household of Archibald Gilchrist, butcher, was
LORENZO PLATT, 19, butcher
Based on what I had found in the 1870 census I needed to find in 1860 a 23 year old Edson Piatt, born NY. Nothing came up for Piatt or Pyatt so I searched for the given name Edson. 505 hits came up for 1860 but the surnames were alphabetical so it took no time to find Edson Peatt, 23. The handwriting on this census page was so bad that I had to search for Archibald in NY to interpret the last name of the butcher as Gilchrist. The Lorenzo Platt is suspicious. The name appears to be Platt and the indexer thought so, too. But the handwriting is so awful that, and due to other findings, I think the name should be Lorenzo Peatt. There is a four year age difference between Edson and Lorenzo.
1870, Dekalb Co IN, Union Township, Waterloo PO
EDSON PIATT, 33, hotel keeper, NY
Mary, 31, NY
Charles, 6, IN
LORENZO PIATT, 29, saloon clerk, NY
George Smith, 22, RR clerk, MO
June, 22, housekeeper, OH
and several more boarders at the hotel
There is a four year age difference between Edson and Lorenzo Piatt.
1880 census at familysearch.org not available this night. However, Piatt Family Newsletter, Volume 4, 1989 lists:
1880 Noble Co IN, Perry township
LORENZO P PIATT, 8, IN in the household of Taylor Shobe as Shobe's step-son. (Was this Lorenzos father Lorenzo the saloon clerk, above, and dead by mothers marriage to Taylor Shobe in 1876 [see below]?)
1900 Cuyahoga Co OH, East Cleveland Village, East Cleveland Township
Woodlawn Ave
LORENZO PIATT, 28, b Apr 1872, hotelkeeper, IN, NY, IN
Lillia E, 26, b May 1874, IN, PA, IN
Louise A, 5, b Aug 1894, IN, IN, IN
EDSON L, 2, b Sep 1897, IN, IN, IN
Beyerle, Rose M, 13, b Mar 1887, sister-in-law, IN, ?, IN
This couple had been married 8 years. The mother had three children, 2 living. A 13 year old sister-in-law is likely to be in the household under her maiden name, giving a clue to Lillia's maiden name if Rose is Lillia's sister. This OH hotelkeeper Lorenzo cannot be the same man as the IN hotelkeeper Lorenzo. However, the OH Lorenzo could be the son of either of the NY/IN men--Edson or Lorenzo. Is this Lorenezo the step-son of Taylor Shobe?
1910 Cuyahoga Co OH, East Cleveland Village, East Cleveland Township
Penrose St
LORENZO PIATT, 38, IN, IN [sic], IN, proprietor of Silver Polish Company
Lillian E, 37, IN, PA, IN
Louise A, 16, IN, IN, IN
EDSON R, 13, IN, IN, IN
This couple had been married 18 years. The mother had four children, either 2 or three living. The handwriting here is bad. There are never three children found in the household.
In addition to this listing above we find little Edson elsewhere:
1910 Fairfield Co OH, Hocking Township
EDSON L PIATT, 12, IN, Ger, Ger, inmate at Boys Industrial School
1910 Cuyahoga Co OH, East Cleveland, East Cleveland township
Henry S Lowe, 35, head
Susan, 35 wife
Pauline, 10, daughter
Clarence, 3, son
Henry Jesse, 27, lodger, single
Owen, Moses, 64, border, widowed
Lyram?, Mary, 23, servant, single
PEATT, LORENZO B, 8, son, single, OH, IN, IN
Beyerle, Rose M, 23, sister-in-law, single, IN, PA, IN
Emblin, Frank A, 24, roomer, married
Emblin, Mary, 23, roomer, married
I can't figure out who Lorenzo B is the son of in this listing. But Rose M Beyerle is listed next to him here and next to Edson, aged 2 ten years before. (History repeats itself, there is a four year age difference between the younger Edson and Lorenzo.)
1920 Los Angeles County, CA, Venice township
LORENZO J PIATT, 47, IN, IN, IN, bookkeeper in window screen factory
Lillian E, 46, IN, PA, IN
They were renting on Washington Road in Venice.
1920 Richland Co OH, Madison Township
EDSON PIATT, 22, IN, IN, IN, Ohio State Reformatory, laborer in tailor shop
1920 Military and Naval, Philippines, Cartel de Infanteria Co-B 27
LORENZO B PIATT, 18, private, OH, IN, IN, 1289 142nd St, Cleveland OH
Could this Lorenzo be the third living child of Lorenzo and Lillian? He never shows up in their household.
Marriage records in Indiana:
Noble Co
Piatt, Lorenzo to Marietta John, 18 Jun 1871 [Book 2:506] (Time and place are close enough for this Lorenzo to be the saloon clerk of the 1870 Dekalb Co IN census.)
Piatt, Marietta to Shobe Taylor, 21 Apr 1876 [Book 3:427] (should be Taylor Shobe)
Piatt, Lorenzo J to Lillie E Beyerle, 14 Jun 1891 [Book 6:320]
Birth Records in Indiana:
Elkhart Co
Piatt, male to L J PIATT and [unnamed] Beyerlie, 28 Nov 1892, LORENZO J PIATT, father
This could be a child who died as there is no child born 1892 in the household of Lorenzo and Lillian in 1900.
PFN Volume 5, 1990, states that Marietta Shobe filed for a pension based on the srvice of Lorenzo Piatt, Co H and Co C, 30th Indiana Infantry. The pension file is not published in PFN. If this Lorenzo Piatt is the 19 year old butcher of NY and the 29 year old saloon clerk of IN, then it's possible the widow's pension filed by Marietta Piatt Shobe (a divorced woman would have no claim, I assume, so we can think "widow") might shed some light on Lorenzo's New York roots.
