I have a little story to tell from an experience this summer that kind
of goes under the heading of you never know
My 21 year old daughter and I were driving my pick up truck from Rhode
Island to California so that she would have transportation for field
trips in her senior year as a geology major. After we were on the road
for two days I informed her that oh by the way, we are going to take a
few hours in Memphis to do a little family history research.
She was less than excited about the notion but knew there were to be
many stops along our route that were a geology students dream, so she
acceded. I wanted to find out what I could about my Great Grandmother
Rosa Barth Piatts parents. I knew that GGM Rosa had lived for a time
in Memphis but knew little about her father. We only had a couple of
hours to spend so I went to the county Historical Society in Memphis
and they were extraordinarily helpful. We were able to identify her
father, Michael Barth who died in 1859 at the age of 33 of Bronchitis.
He was a saddle tree maker at the time.
Well the kicker of this is that while I was checking on GGGF Barth, my
daughter, who I thought was bored to tears, was looking through the
city directories looking for any Piatts she might find. She came over
to me after a bit with book in hand and said Hey Dad, check this out,
I found Michael Piatt in the 1866 City Directory for Memphis. I said
that doesnt make sense, he was a veterinarian living in St. Loius at
that time and as far as I knew never lived in Memphis. Sure enough,
there he is listed, Michael H Piatt (Orlopp & Co) R. St. Louis.
Turns out he was a partner in a livery stable at 437 & 439 Main Street
with an individual named Richard Orlopp. At that point the guy helping
us from the Society said, well that makes sense. Well he saw the
puzzled look on my face and explained that our Piatt must have been
pretty well to do and had some business smarts. I was still puzzled.
He further explaind that the main mode of transportation at that time
for the westward expansion was horses and that the two cities supplying
almost all of the horses for the westward expansion were St Louis and
Memphis. The lights came on. It probably also accounts for how my
great grand parents probably met as youngsters since Harry B. Piatts
father Michael was a vet with business interests in Memphis and Rosa
Barths father likely made saddle trees for the livery stable it does
not take too much of a stretch to see the connection. I congratulated
my daughter and told her that I would not have thought to look up Piatt
there. So now we have another little piece and a cool connection even
if it is shameless conjecture. I love this stuff.

PS to Laverne: On the way I introduced my daughter, Nobu, to the Piatt
Castles in West Liberty. She was impressed. Cheers.
