Subject: [PIATT] Two Daughters of John Pyeatt and Martha Jane Blair of Guilford Co., NC
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 2004 13:11:01 -0700
Hi, Sharolynn --
John Pyeatt and Martha Jane Blair of Guilford Co., NC, apparently had two
daughters, Martha (Patsy) Pyeatt and Jane Pyeatt. Their birth dates are
uncertain.
(1) Martha (Patsy) Pyeatt -- Here are two web pages that present
information about Martha (Patsy) Pyeatt:
(1.1) "Tradition is, that John WHITE and Martha (Patsy) PYETT were
married in South Carolina and their first born child, was James WHITE born
near Nashville, July 27, 1789. We can guess that John WHITE arrived at
Nashville in 1788...." This beigns about two pages of narrative, and is
followed by information about their son, James White, and his
descendants. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~szmatlok/Bailey/3-4.html
(1.2) "James WHITE, was born July 17, 1789, near the home of General
Jackson, south of Nashville. In 1808, with his parents, John WHITE and
Martha (Patsy) PYEATT, he moved to Waverly Blue Creek, south of Waverly,
Tenn., and north of Duck River, where they farmed and raised cattle until
the Jackson Purchase in 1818...." This is followed by about half a page of
narrative. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnbenton/ancest4.htm
(2) Jane Pyeatt -- She married Henry Davis of Rowan Co. NC about 1792;
they then moved to Grayson Co. VA. The family tradition that they lived in
Georgia seems implausible, though it is not impossible. Henry Davis
first appeared on the tax lists in Grayson Co. VA in 1805. (They may have
previously lived in neighboring Wythe Co. VA, for Henry Davis Sr. and Henry
Davis Jr. appeared on the 1800 Wythe tax lists.).
(2.1) The children of Henry Davis and Jane "Pyatte" and approximate
birth dates are listed at the FamilySearch.org site; you can do a parent
search to find them. John b1794; Peter b1796; Jacob b1795; James b1800;
Samuel b1797; Sarah b1802; Ruth b1804; Martha b1807; Martha b1807; James
(2nd?) b1809. All are reported to have been born in Grayson Co. VA, but
this may not have been the case for the older children.
(2.2) The oldest son, John Davis, was born 1794 VA, according to the
1880 census of Grayson Co. VA; he lists his parents birthplaces at NJ and
NC. Here is information from a now-defunct web page
http://www.sparklesco.com/John/d48.htm), which you can get from Google's
cache. To get to the cited sources, retrieve this page through the Internet
Archive's Wayback Machine at http://www.archive.org/:
"John DAVIS (205) (111) was born in 1794 in Grayson County, Virginia.
(5) He appeared on the census in 1850 in Grayson County, Virginia. (395) He
appeared on the census in 1860 in Grayson County, Virginia.(396) He
appeared on the census in 1870 in Grayson County, Virginia. (397) He
appeared on the census in 1880 in Grayson County, Virginia. (398) Parents:
Henry DAVIS and Jane PAYETTE.
"He was married to Sarah PARSONS on 24 Jan 1831 in Grayson County,
Virginia.(7) (5) Children were: Jonathan F. DAVIS, Nancy DAVIS, Patsy DAVIS
, Henderson DAVIS, Matilda DAVIS, Elisha DAVIS, Ludema DAVIS, Mary Ann
DAVIS, Eli R. DAVIS."
John Davis's 1880 census record can be found at
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1880US_14053863&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=5
(2.3) Sarah Davis (born 1802) was married to John Reedy on 20 Aug 1825
in Grayson County, VA. Sarah Davis was born in 1802 in Grayson County, VA.
She died after 1880. See more at the Google cache for
www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/4090/reedy/d795.htm.
(2.4) Ruth Davis (born 1804) was married to Fredrick Reedy "on 25 Mar
1825 in Grayson County, VA. Ruth Davis was born about 1804 in Grayson
County, VA. Ruth was the daughter of Henry Davis. Her and Fredrick had no
children. Fredrick was killed in a accident in 1859. On the 1860 census she
is the head of household with Fredrick Sheets as a laborer. In 1880, at age
76, she is with her brother, John Davis and wife Sallie." (Source:

Good luck with your research.

>13 Dec 1757. John apprenticed James and Jacob to a bell-maker in

>John Pyeatt of Guilford Co. died 16 Aug 1778. After his death, his son,
>Jacob, (born 1760) was appointed guardian of his minor siblings, James
>and Martha. Jacob, James, Martha are all referred to as "John Pyeatt's
>orphans" in later land transactions in Guilford County. In some of the
>land transactions, the name Jane appears to clearly refer to John's wife
>(Martha Jane). There is also reference to an adult, Peter Pyeatt, as
>one of his heirs.
>
>Ravenscroft lists John and Martha Jane Blair Pyeatt's children as:
>Robert, Peter, Benjamin, Capt. Jacob, Martha, James, and Jane. She
>assumes that this Peter is the one who dies in Charleston in 1818, whose

>The Smith book is erroneous in stating that James and Jacob who settle
>in Arkansas, and the Martha who married John White, are the children of
>Peter, Sr. They definitely appear to be children of John Pyeatt and
>Martha Jane Blair of Guilford Co., NC.
>
>I have never found any concrete evidence regarding Jane Pyeatt Davis,
>who is said to have migrated to Georgia. As for Robert, Peter and
>Benjamin's parentage, I am also uncertain. It would appear that John
>had a son, Peter, since he is mentioned as one of John's heirs. If so,
>was Martha Jane Blair John's second wife? Given that John was 22 when
>he married her, it's possible, but is it likely?
>
>There is also mention of a Robert Pyeatt of Virginia who took an oath of
>allegiance in Virginia on 25 Sep 1777. John Pyatt of Virginia who
>refused to take the oath of allegiance on 4 October 1777. There is also
>mention of a Joseph Pyatt, born in Warwickshire, England in 1755, who
>enlisted in the Revolutionary army in Virginia in 1776 and 1778. They
>indicate that this same Joseph was granted a pension in 1833 and was
>living in Burke Co., NC at that time. They indicate that they have no
>clues as to any relationship between these individuals and their
>ancestor, Peter, Sr.
>
>At the same time, they indicate that there is no other reference to any
>Pyeatt or Pyatt in either North or South Carolina prior to 1800. But,
>given the documentation regarding John and Martha in Guilford Co., NC,
>that statement is definitely wrong. Land records definitely place their
>family in North Carolina around 1767/1768. The brothers, James and
>Jacob did not appear to have moved from Guilford Co. to Warren Co,
>Kentucky until about 1798, based upon where their children were born.
>Those born in 1796 were born in North Carolina and those born in 1798
>were born in Kentucky.
>
>So... my conclusion to all of this is that their documentation needs to
>be reviewed before drawing any conclusions. There may be some kernels
>of truth there-- and it may help to clarify the relationship between
>John and Peter, Sr.
