For Robin,

To recap, a few days ago you posted this information:

<<ANTHONY PIATT b abt 1799 Paris, France d 27 Apr 1890, Canton, OH
married abt 1848, Lyons, NY to
Dorah Fox b abt 1810 France, d 1 Jan 1889, Hillsdale, MI

Children:
-CARRIE PIATT b. 25 Feb 1852, Lyons, NY; d. 1 May 1893, Boyne City, MI
Married John Vanway Pickering and had two daughters

-WILLIAM PIATT b. 6 Jun 1856, Hillsdale, Hillsdale Co., MI; d. abt 1902, Hillsdale, Hillsdale Co., MI; Married 3 Mar 1892, Kenton, OH to Belle Meyers

-HELEN PIATT b. 21 Jan 1850, Lyons, NY; Married 21 Sep 1885 to Will Day.>>

By some creative searching we found Anthony in the 1880 census and subsequently in the 1860 and 1870 census listings always in Hillsdale Co MI. His son William was still at home in 1880, daughter Helen working as a "dining room girl" in a hotel, and daughter Carrie was living with her husband Mr Pickering.

Since the website which provided the information stated that Anthony Piatt died in Canton OH, I thought that locating the death record might provide the names of Anthony's parents and said I would try to check in Canton at the end of the month. However, Tuesday when I needed to do some Christmas shopping I decided I could shop just as well in Canton as anywhere else, so off I went.

I went to the Stark Co District Library which has an excellent genealogical room. The death records for Anthony's time period have been published and, guess what,---he was not listed. Since this is Piatt research, I was not at all surprised. I speculated that there was a Canton MI and the librarian and I consulted an atlas which showed Canton Township, now an incorporated township, at the western edge of Wayne Co MI, about two counties from Hillsdale. So that was a possibility. I could have double checked the newspapers on microfilm for Anthony's obituary, but felt that the published death records were correct, that Anthony did not die there.

Let's look at where Anthony's children were in 1900, 8 years after his death.

CARRIE PIATT PICKERING had died in 1893 in Boyne City MI according to the information above. The 1900 census showed her widower John V Pickering living alone in Boyne City, Eveline Township, Charlevoix Co MI.

WILLIAM PIATT was in Cambria Township, Hillsdale Co MI, in family 147/148. William was 44 and wife Isabelle, born OH, was 46. They had been married 8 years and had no children.

HELEN PIATT DAY was found in Blanchard Township, Hardin Co OH in 1900. HELEN was 50 as was her husband William Day. They had been married 14 years and had one child, son William Day, 12, born in IN.

And here's the strange part. It was William's wife Belle Meyers Piatt who was, according to the website, born in Kenton OH. But it is her sister-in-law Helen Piatt Day who is living near Kenton OH in 1900. The sisters-in-law had switched places, more or less. Kenton is the county seat of Hardin Co OH. So now the best guess is that Anthony Piatt died in KENTON OH, not Canton, two cities which are often confused. Ed and I have friends in West Liberty, over past Kenton, so I hope we visit them next on a business day.
