This came in from the website and is forwarded with permission. Food for
thought at least, and one of you folks may be able to help her with NJ>PA
stuff. Ive also encouraged her to look into the DNA study. Please post to
the list or cc me if you would--Im interested in the opinions about this.

Subject: Have a question re: Flatt surname
Bear with me a second. I research the Flatt surname and one of the
researchers has a source about the Flatts going from Piscataway, NJ to
Northampton PA then to Northumberland Co, PA. He has found some land deeds
that he said are for Joseph, Samuel, Peter and that the father who went
there was named Francis (he found the records for the children, John, Joseph
Samuel, Peter in the Centennial History of Susquehanna County book) . I
have been looking for some time for any Flatts that seem to have done this
migration trail and it seemed very strange that, while I can find an Andrew
Flatt in 1790 in Northumberland Co (he went to Muncy/Lycoming Co), I not
only couldn't find any Francis, Samuel, etc- PLUS in the Flatts that I am
looking at only some 25-50 years later those names are not at all carried
down.
Through a fluke of me trying different variations of the surname, I stumbled
across Piatt and was astounded. The migration trail is the same-Piscataway >
Northumberland and the names in Rene Piatt's family echo those of the Flatt
researcher.
But here's the rub of what I wish to know. We believe that one branch of the
Flatts, in particular, stem from one James Flatt who was probably born in
Piscataway (found James Flatt listed in First Settlers of New Jersey) and
married Elizabeth Depray (Dupre). In the book Middlesex County New Jersey
Deed Abstracts Book I, a deed from one John Flatt of Woodbridge to a cousin
John in Harford *Merriland* mentions that he is son of William, son of James
The time frame would, I think, make him born c 1731. Imagine my surprise
when I saw that, indeed, you have a James born in the same time frame, in
Piscataway, that married an Elizabeth. There is also a strong connection in
the early 1800's with Shotwell and I see connections there as well.
so, my first question is, what do you know about your James Piatt m
Elizabeth ? -is there any possibility this could actually be MY James FLATT
of Woodbridge, NJ? With the John Flatt b c 1831, he is said to have had the
following children: Sarah, William, Gersham, Amasa, who were in Piscataway.
One story I found was that William H Flatt, son of a Phineas Flatt, son of
James Flatt, apparently was one of those who took over a building
Shotwell/Quaker had and it became the 2nd Presbyterian Church in Rahway.
Maybe all this is coincidence but it has an odd ring about it.
