Thanks Laverne!
I have found that the PFN, like my website at piattresearchers.net, is only
as accurate as the people who submit information. Im not suggesting it isnt
a valuable too though--it's INCREDIBLY helpful. But it's not the bible of
Piatt research I once thought it was. Im still saving my pennies for the
rest of the set though. One of these days that sucker is going online!
One of the glaring inacuracies is the birth information of Edward William
who married Amy Throckmorton. He is my line and I can tell you
unconditionally that he was born not in Nicholas County as we once believed,
but in Mason County. In fact, the word among family is that he never set
foot in Nicholas County *grin*.
I also question the marriage information for John S and Mary Snyder. Mary
and her sister Lucinda (who married brother William Piatt) were Jackson
County girls. William and Lucinda married in Mason County and I have
submitter information that John and Mary were also married in Mason County
(Mason co, Wv Book 3 Pg 196 marriage records) and Im inclined to believe
the girls wouldnt have gone far from home for thier weddings.
One thing I really need to get more information on is the border changes for
Jackson county. Im wondering if there was really only one farm and the
county changed from Kanawha to Putnam to Mason to Jackson. Also, another
area in Jackson County we are familiar with in regard to the Johns (Cuba) is
very close to what is now the border with Wood County. I am thinking of
poking around in Wood records as well.

For Robin:
Thanks for the kind words, but don't blame your shoelaces so much as the
fact that the old folks used the name John Piatt way too much.
PFN Volume 4 gives a family group listing for John Pyatt and Margaret
Katherine "Mary" Snyder. There were 12 children and a listing with brief
information is:
1. Sarah E, b 20 Sep 1865, Kanawha Co WV
2. Emmagette, b 20 Dec 1867, Kanawha Co WV
3. Anne L, b 5 or 15 May 1869, Mason Co WV
4. Louisa J, b 8 Feb 1871, place not given (Happy Birthday, Louisa)
5. Edward William, b 2 Feb 1873, Nicholas Co WV (married Amy Throckmorton)
6. Nathan, b 20 Nov 1875, Mason Co WV
7. Rhoda Lee, b 19 Oct 1877, place not given
8. Margaret, b 18 Sep 1879, Putnam Co WV
9. Roxey Ellen, b 15 Apr 1881, Jackson Co WV (married George Bernard
Collins); d 12 Aug 1958, Sewickley PA.
10. Mettie Belle, b 19 Oct 1883, Jackson Co WV
11. Nora Etta, b 4 Jul 1885, Monroe Co OH
12. John Grover, b 19 May 1887, place not given.
The only lines extended further in PFN are those of Edward William and Roxey
Ellen. Sources for this information are Mason Co WV marriage Certificate and
Jackson Co WV marriages 1880-1900; Register of Deaths; Obituary Notices;
family records of Edith Collins Viskochil and Elmer Pyatt. Apparently Edith
was a descendant of Roxey Ellen. It may be possible to find an obituary for
Roxey Ellen Collins in the Pittsburgh papers.
If the birthplaces are correct here, Snider's John should have arrived in
Jackson Co WV between child 8 and 9. But I can't find the family in the 1880
census--at least not yet. The 1880 census at LDS is an every name census. I
searched on the given names of the older children, such as Emmagette, Nathan
Louisa, in WV, with no surname in the search field. There were many hits
for the given names, but the family didn't show up in the lists. I'm not
done searching, however.
The birthdate for Snider's John is given as 16 Jun 1840 but is calculated
from information on his marriage--24 years, 3 months of age. The marriage is
given as occuring in Nicholas Co, but Nicholas Co marriages are not listed
as a source in the Viskochil information. A different listing in PFN gives
the reference as Nicholas Co Marriage Book 3:19.
I haven't done any original research on the information above and pass it
along only for further consideration.
And, BTW, the 1860 listing for Snider's John and his brother William who
married Mary Snider's sister is:
1860 Nicholas Co VA, fam #733, 3 Aug 1860
James KOONTZ, 64, VA, married within the year (!, go James!)
Rebecca, 60, VA, (with four children, Sarah 27, John 25, Eliza 21, and
Wooten 20, all b VA, surname not given in PFN whether Koontz or other)
WILLIAM PEYATTE, 31, VA
JOHN PEYATTE, 19
Wm Lovesey?, 60, VA, blacksmith
PFN lists Snider's John's death date as only c1894, age 54, of pneumonia.
