For Robin,
You probably have the chronology of the establishment of the four counties: Kanawha, Mason, Putnam, and Jackson.
Kanawha est. 1788 from Greenbrier and Montgomery (VA); county seat Charleston
Mason est 1804 from Kanawha; county seat Point Pleasant
Jackson est 1831 from Kanawha, Mason and Wood; county seat Ripley
Putnam est 1848 from Kanawha, Mason and Cabell; county seat Winfield
On the one hand I don't like to hear that you think several of your Piatts were in Mason Co WV, but that's because Jo Lauer's line of Piatts were there, too, at some point. Some are buried in a cemetery near Letart Falls, and they are not ones you mentioned so far. On the other hand Mason Co WV County Clerk has records from 1789 and the civil court has records from 1792. It would seem that some of those records would predate the establishment of the county so would have been transferred from Kanawha Co? Wes Cochran has transcribed many records from counties in this area and his work is excellent. Census records for Mason County WV, however, don't yield much.
You are right about the information in PFN. Lynn tried very hard to transcribe accurately but she could not verify the research herself. That's why we have to take what we read and compare against original records.
The marrige record for John S Peyatt and Mary C Snider is from _Marriage Records for Mason Co WV, 29 Jun 1850 to 29 Nov 1866_. Reference is given as Book 3:19. But also it is stated that the marriage occurred "at the home of Thoms Snyder" and was performed by Isaac E Smith, a minister. But four years earlier, in 1860, Thomas Snyder was not in Mason Co or in Jackson Co. A likely family was Thomas and Elizabeth Snyder, family 6 in Roane Co WV, LeRoy PO. Childen were: William 16, Michael 14, Mary 13, Lucinda 11, James 10 and Minerva 4. Neighbor appears to be George Peat 25 and wife Jane 18.
Even though these men were listed as farmers, it seems that there was a lot of moving around, and I always wonder if their other possible job of oil field worker was the cause.
A good search through the records of the several WV counties should put some pieces of the puzzle in place--a good summer project.
