In 1989,Volume 4 of the Piatt Family Newsletter published a theoretical family group of William and Mary Smith Peatt of (W)VA listing some 11 children. The two youngest were Alexander, b c 1840 and John S, b 16 June 1842. John S is believed to be the man who married Mary Catherine Snyder. But what became of Alexander Pyatt? Nothing further is given in PFN.
In the 1850 census John Piatt, aged 8, is listed in the household of Margaret Peatt, presumably Mary Smith Peatt, William's widow. Alexander Peatt, however, aged 10, is listed in the household of John and Margaret Foster of Nicholas Co (W)VA.
In 1860 John Peyatt, 19, is listed (along with William Peyatte, 31) in the household of James and Rebecca Koontz of Nicholas Co (W)VA. Although the Koontzes were aged 64 and 60, they had been married within the year. Alexander Pyater [sic], 21, was listed in the household of Anthony Rader of Nicholas Co (W)VA in 1860. Alexander was a laborer.
In 1864 John S Pyatt married Mary Catherine Snyder and established his own household. In 1870 Alexander Pyat [sic], 29, was found in the household of William and Rebecca Davis of Mill Creek Township, Jackson Co WV. Alexander was a farm laborer.
I have not yet discovered what creative spelling of Pyatt Alexander appears under in the 1880 census. But in 1900 Alexander Pyatt, 58, was a boarder in the household of James A Copenouer (?) of Grant District of Nicholas Co WV. Although the writing is poor, Alexander's occupation appears to be "pauper."
With Alexander never appearing as head of his own household, it is easy to assume that he had no children. Does anyone know if this is true? I will continue to look at the 1880, 1910 and 1920 censuses to complete the story.
