For Eddie:
Welcome to the list. I hope it will be productive for you.
Concerning your James Francis Piatt and son James Weldon Piatt I looked at
the Social Security Death Index which is available free at rootsweb:
http://www.rootsweb.com
The death index lists James Piatt which would be your James Francis Piatt
with the same birth and death dates that you give: b 16 Oct 1876 and d 7 Apr
1964. His Social Security card was issued in Virginia and the last residence
listed for him was also Virginia.
A second James Piatt, which would be your James Weldon Piatt, was listed in
the SSDI as born 29 August 1900 and died 9 January 1987. His card was issued
in NC and his last residence was listed as Kinston, Lenoir Co NC.
There was no listing for any Mark Piatt in the index.
I believe it's about a 200 mile trip for you across NC to Kinston so, if I
may suggest, before you make the trip you might want to call or e-mail the
Kinston library or the (presumably) larger library in Goldsboro. With the
death date of 9 Jan 1987, the reference department of the library should be
able to locate an obituary in the local newspaper and send you a copy by
mail or e-mail--or even read it to you by phone. Ask about a county
historical society which might help you locate James W's grave if he was
buried there. Once you know James W's survivors you will be closer to tying
these later generations together.
Good luck and keep the list posted as to what you find. Everything on the
list goes into the list archives and can be of great help to a future
researcher.
