New Piatt DNA results have been posted to the Piatt public page at:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Piatt

Member #31325, who is now listed first on the spreadsheet of results, is from the Monroe Co OH line of Piatts who moved to Idaho in the later 1800s. And he matches our other participant (#6529) from the Monroe Co OH line 25/25. I figure these two participants to be fourth cousins.

For those who like to study the DNA numbers I invite your critique of my conclusions drawn from these new results.

The two Monroe Co participants descend from brothers who were sons of James Piatt Sr and Nancy Coleman(?). #6529 descends from James Piatt Jr (m Catherine Moffet) and #31325 descends from Benjamin Piatt (m 1st, Eliza ____ and 2nd, Louisa Hall). Both #6529 and #31325 carry a 9 on DYS 385a. Since both descendants carry the 9, the father James Piatt Sr had to carry a 9 at that location as well.

Studying the DNA results will help determine when DYS 385a changed from 11 to 9.

James Piatt Sr descends from Rene:

.Rene Piatt and Elizabeth Sheffield
..Jacob Piatt I and Mary Hull
...Jacob Piatt II and Jean Paul, 1st and Jane Young, 2nd
....Jacob Piatt III and Elizabeth Dunham
.....James Piatt Sr

Participant #31479 descends from Jacob Piatt II and Jane Young but not through Jacob III. Participant #31479 carries 11 on DYS 385a. Therefore Jacob II had an 11 there as well.

Participant #7549 descends from Benjamin Piatt of Adams Co OH who married Polly Waddel. We believe Benjamin was a son or grandson of Jacob III. Since #7549 carries an 11 on DYS 385a, Jacob III carried an 11 there also.

Therefore, the conclusion is that the number of repetitions on DYS 385a changed from 11 to 9 as it was passed from Jacob III to his son James Sr. James Sr had to carry a 9 on this DYS for both of his sons to inherit it.

And since both the change from 11 to 9 and the divergence of the two Monroe Co OH lines occured in two generations, the change from 11 to 9 must have occurred in one step. There was not time for the change to go through two steps from 11 to 10 to 9.

While this exercise may be academic it is interesting to be able to note the time of a change in the DNA. The changes, or "mutations" help to demonstrate the branching patterns of a family over time. Perhaps one day we will be able to learn when DYS 459b for participants #7549 and #7659 changed from 10 to 9.

As I said at the beginning of this posting, comments and criticisms of these statements are welcome. Its all for the good of the cause.
