Some information was posted on the MOSES PIATTs back in 2000. This would be a good time to bring it all together for a repost and review and to use the compilation as a base for further research. Some of the messages may be out of order but here's some of what was posted then:

Hi Anita and listers,

Congratulations on finding information on your Elizabeth Hannah Piatt Armfield
and her parents. Let this be a lesson to us all. Call those cousins!

Your finding of Elizabeth Hannah's birthdate of 31 July 1828 makes her fit
into this family headed by a Moses Piatt (approximate birthdates added): (And
if your cousin in WI has information about Hannah's siblings, it might help
fill in names and birthdates of others in this listing.)

1830 FRANKLIN Co OH, Truro Township, page 35.

MOSES PIATT50-60(1770-1780)
female40-50(1780-1790)
2 males20-30(1800-1810)
2 females15-20(1810-1815)
female10-15(1815-1820)
2 females 5-10(1820-1825)
female 0-5(1825-1830), possibly Elizabeth Hannah

Earlier census records for a Moses Piatt family which might match this one are:

1820 COSHOCTON Co OH, Linton Township, page 25

MOSES PIATT45+(bef 1775)
female25-45(1775-1795)
female16-26(1794-1804)
male10-16(1804-1810)
female10-16(1804-1810)
male

0-10(1810-1820)
3 females 0-10(1810-1820)

These two listings are a pretty good match and might certainly be the same
family first in Coshocton Co OH, then Franklin Co OH.

However to confuse matters there are apparently younger and contemporaneous
families of other MOSES PIATTs in:

1820 HAMPSHIRE Co VA, M33, 136, p 269A

MOSES PIATT26-45(1775-1794)
female26-45(1775-1794)
2 females16-26(1794-1804)
male10-16(1804-1810)
3 females 0-10(1810-1820)
male 0-10(1810-1820)

1830 SENECA Co OH, Adams Twp, page 166

MOSES PYATT20-30(1800-1810)
female20-30(1800-1810)
male10-15(1815-1820)
female10-15(1815-1820)
male 0-5(1825-1830)

This SENECA Co OH family is almost a perfect match for this one later
(approximate birth dates added):

1850 LaGRANGE Co IN, p 33, Millford Twp, 445/447

MOSES PYATT46 OH(1804)
Elizabeth48 NJ(1802), said to be Elizabeth Parker
Andrew21 OH(1829), Andrew J, m Julia Swogger
Charles W19 OH(1831)
Sarah J15 OH(1835)
Mary E13 OH(1837)
Abigail 5 IL(1845)

In between these last two listings, this family was also in IN

1840 LaGRANGE Co IN, Millford Twp, page 332

MOSES PIATT30-40(1800-1810)
female30-40(1800-1810)
female20-30(1810-1820)
male10-15(1825-1830)
female10-15(1825-1830)
male 5-10(1830-1835)
female 0-5(1835-1840)

I see three different Moses Piatts in these census listings:

1820 Hampshire Co VA (WVA) b 1775-1794

1820 Coshocton Co OH, 1830 Franklin Co OH, b 1770-1780

1830 Seneca Co OH, 1840 LaGrange Co IN, 1850 LaGrange Co IN, b c 1802

The 1820 listings for the first two Moses Piatts just above are quite closely
matched. Is it possible that this is the same Moses counted in two states?
Has anyone found a case where there is a duplicate listing before?

Tax records for Hampshire Co VA show a Moses Peatt taxed on 10 Apr 1802 on
himself as "1 white male over 16" and 0 horses. Moses Peatt/Peyat appears in
the Hampshire Co VA tax lists under the same circumstances in May 1804, 1812,
1813, 1815, and 12 Apr 1815. In 1820 he was taxed on himself and 1 horse.
Did he acquire the horse for the trip to OH? He is not found on Hampshire Co
tax lists from 1821-1827.

Information presented here was published in the Piatt Family Newsletter but
should be checked against original documents whenever possible. Discussion
and criticism are always welcome.

Congratulations to Anita and her relatives for obtaining and posting the
information about ELIZABETH HANNAH PIATT ARMFIELD which gave Hannah's parents
as MOSES PIATT and JANE SMITH of Virginia.

This would make a second PIATT/SMITH connection in Virginia, the other being
the marriage of WILLIAM PEATT [sic] and MARY SMITH on 17 Nov 1814 in Augusta
Co VA. The marriage record gives MARY SMITH as the daughter of MARTIN SMITH.

It would be an understatement to say that we have to wonder if these two sets
of people were closely related. It might help to begin looking at Smith
families in Virginia and New Jersey.

I notice that HANNAH's birthplace is given as Canton, Stark Co OH, 1828.
Although that is possible, by 1830 two MOSES PIATTs were listed in the census
records as living in different places:

1830, Franklin Co OH, Truro Twp (near Port Columbus airport)
Moses Piatt
1 male 50-60
2 males 20-30
1 female 40-50
2 females 15-20
1 female 10-15
2 females 5-10
1 female under 5
neighbors were George W Calp and William McComb
(could this be a three generational family?)

1830, Seneca Co OH, Adams Twp
Moses Pyatt [sic] (appears in one index as Moses Ryatt)
1 male 20-30
1 male 10-15
1 male under 5
1 female 20-30
1 female 10-15
neighbors were Jacob Whiteman, John Petticord, and John Elder

It would appear that the Seneca Co OH MOSES PYATT would not be the family of
Hannah's parents. There is no 2 year old female. I believe a county history
refers to this family as that of MOSES and ELIZABETH PARKER PIATT later of
northern Indiana. Deed records of Seneca Co show that all of the sales made
by this Moses were with a wife Elizabeth.

If we could find a deed record of MOSES and JANE or JANE PIATT selling land in
Franklin Co OH we would have reasonable proof that the 1830 Franklin Co family
is the right one to be the family of HANNAH.

If anyone has access to Ancestry.com's databases or another such source, could
you make a quick check to see if any land records are available for Stark or
Franklin Co OH? I don't believe birth records were kept anywhere in Ohio
until 1867 so that avenue of research for Hannah's birth is out.

I now know who were Elizabeth hannah Piatt's (brn 1828 in Ohio.)
parents were Moses Piatt and Jane Smith from West Virginia. This was told to
me by a distant found cousin from Beloit WI., her husband Ralph Armfield was
related to Isaac Armfield who Eliz Hannah Piatt married in 1851. She also
said that there name was always spelled Piatt. I am in the process of
sending her my family info and pictures and hope she can answer the list of
questions I will be sending. She does not have a PC. So it is by snail mail.
There are a couple of Moses Piatts listed in the Piatt newsletters, as I
was told earlier on this list.
Is there anyone that know more of this family? I sure would like to connect
up to the rest of the family. Who were Moses brothers and sisters? Or any
other info? Thanks Anita Acosta

information obtained by Ron and Marilyn Jennings.
Sent to me by Margaret and Ralph Armfield, Beloit WI.
I am trying to find a for sure link between Moses and Jane to the other
Piatts. I know 2 Moseses are mentioned in the 1830 and 1820 censes but it
does not list children's names, just head of house. Does anyone have any
info? Thanks Anita
*****

Hi Dee, Would it be possible to list the IN. info of Hamilton and other
CO's on our PIATT site? I feel that my side of the family came from this
area also. If not I would love to have a copy also and will be glad to
compensate you for your time and expenses?

Another bit of info, after receiving the name of a distant but direct cousin
of the name of Ralph and Margaret Armfield who live in Beloit WI. , I called
them yesterday , and what a good talk I had! LO and BEHOLD! I finally
learned the names of my 3rd grt grd mother Elizabeth Hannah, born July 31,
1828 in Ohio (she went by Hannah) PIATT.....Her father's name was Moses
Piatt and her mother was Jane Smith and they were from Virigina. Eliz
hannah's daughter was Florence Armfield brn 1869 in Montfort WI. She was
married to Frank P. Williams and her father was Isaac Armfield.

They now are sending me pictures- and all kinds of great info, we will
exchange what we have. These people are the closest family members I have
found on my grd mother's side Bessie Williams Strickland. from Janesville
WI.
What a find! One Brick wall down!!!

Does anyone belong to the Moses and Jane PIATT family?
Thanks to all, Anita A Ridgecrest CA.
