William Steuart/Stewart was supposedly born in Scotland around 1732. He
was a well-educated man and became a schoolteacher in Virginia after his
plans for entering a profession were dashed when pirates took all his
possessions, including his books, when he was on his way here off the
Virginia coast and left him on the beach with only a piece of canvas cloth.
I have two questions:
Is there a particular Stewart line that favored the "Steuart" spelling?
Are there records for Scottish Universities from the time period around
1750? I suspect he must have graduated from one of them, and thought that
school records might help.
... What did I do before I chased dead men?
