Geoff,
Alas I am unable to replicate your research. There are
several Mary Semmens in the 1901 census but none of them
born or resident in Essex. Most of them live in Cornwall.
On the 1881 Census there is also a Mary Jane Semmens.
Please advise. Perhaps I am not looking in the correct
place.
