I haven't got the BVRI, but the 1881 Census shows 10 people called Mary
SEMMENS born within 5 years of 1866, 7 born and living in Cornwall, 1 born
and living in Warwickshire, 1 born and living in Aberdeen, and 1 born in
England and living in Haddington, Scotland. I then looked at the population
of the village of Goldhanger on the 1881 Census, to see if anyone called
SEMMENS was living there, with no result. I then tried the FreeBMD site,
but the nearest was a Mary Anne SEMMENS who was born in Penzance, Cornwall
in 1864. Finally, I tried the 1901 Census, but the only two people in the
whole country called Mary SEMMENS listed there were one born in
Perranarworthall, Cornwall and living in Smethwick, near Birmingham, and the
other born in Mountain Ash, Glamorganshire, and living in the
complexly-named "Ystradyfodwg Formerly In The Civil Parish Of Llanwonno",
Glamorganshire. The only SEMMENS I could find on the 1901 Census with any
relationship to Essex, let alone to Goldhanger, was 19 year old Thomas
SEMMENS, born Gravesend, Kent, and living in Essex (not other place name
given, but he was a mariner, so perhaps he was on a ship in an Essex
harbour). Can you remember how you managed to find her on the 1901
Census? Also, was Goldhanger where she was born, or where she was living in
1901?
