I have the same quandary with my French Canadians. I will usually make the
memo in English and add the French in parens so others who may be more fluent
than me can get the full flavor of it. Such as; he contracted for a western
journey (engagé Ouest) on 3 May 1692. Same thing with occupations. I put the
English equivalent with the original French in parens.
