Subject: Re: TMG-L: Whew! Freezeups. - Solution??

I've been lurking for a long while watching others argue about the freeze up problems. I may have come across a solution (at least, what is laid out below seems to work for me on my P133 system, Win95 (4.00.950a), 80 MB RAM, TMG 4.0).

My problem comes from an incompatibility with MSIE 4.0. If MSIE starts before TMG, TMG will lock up immediately as it begins to execute. A complete lockup requiring hitting the reset button. The lockup occurs even if I exit from MSIE prior to running TMG, so long as MSIE started before TMG did.

Others have suggested simply starting TMG before MSIE. I've gone one step further and verified that these sequences work OK for me:

Test 1) Bootup - -> start TMG (OK) - -> start MSIE - -> exit TMG - -> restart TMG while MSIE is still running (OK).

Test 2) Bootup - -> start TMG - -> exit TMG - -> start MSIE - -> re-start TMG (OK) - -> exit TMG - -> exit MSIE - -> re-start TMG (OK)

From these tests, it looks like the freezeup does not occur so long as TMG is activated prior to MSIE. More significantly, TMG can even be closed out prior to running MSIE, and when TMG later re-starts it does not lock up (Test 2). I'm not qualified to comment on the cause of the lockup; others have speculated that MSIE doesn't relinquish vital areas of memory when it exits. However, based on Test 2, it seems to me that the problem may lie with TMG doing some grabbing of memory and/or system resources of its own; as long as TMG goes before MSIE, there is no compatibility problem with MSIE even if TMG isn't running when MSIE starts up. My solution: include TMG in my StartUp folder, and close it out if I don't want to use it. As long as it ran OK earlier in the current bootup session, it should always start up again.

I don't know if this will help other problems of immediate lockup upon executing TMG (what about Outlook?). Perhaps those persons who do not have the lockup problem are always starting TMG prior to MSIE/Outlook, whereas those persons who do have the lockup always occur if MSIE/Outlook runs at any time prior to TMG.

As usual, your results may vary.

Hope this helps someone.

Bruce
