The concept of having a citation is so that a reader may find with relative
ease the source being cited. This is no different in genealogy from any
other discipline. Genealogy does include some specialized sources, but the
concept remains the same.

Thus for your index, the main part of the citation would be to describe it
so that anyone can find the document being described. For this, you would
need a description of the document, including the format of the document if
it is in microform, where it may be found (the repository and location,
and/or publisher and location). For foot/endnotes, the citation would
include any breakdown of the source, i.e., volume, chapter, section, frame,
page, line, etc. as well as possibly the subject name and any other
identifying information.

The only Source Category designed specifically for an index is for the LDS
International Genealogical Index although many other Source Categories
could be used with various degrees of modifications. Also some categories
(e.g., Birth Registration (when not a certificate)) are nearly indexes and
could be adapted for use.

Far from entering citations in the Memo, create a new Source in the Master
Source List, and cite that source in your tag(s). Any additional specific
information (e.g., page and line number) for the citation (i.e., for that
tag) would be entered in the Citation Detail field. This then will allow
you to have proper footnoting/endnoting and bibliographic entries.

Hope this helps -
