I know what you are talking about.
I have 2000 "sources" imported from FTW last year and I just finished
editing/merging number 500 yesterday.
There is no easy way around it - the problem is FTW "sources" were just free
text boxes where TMG's "sources" are much more rigorous. The "identical
sources" you want to merge as one set really are slightly different, e.g.
you may have entered "page 113" in one and "page 247" in another. Most of
my FTW "sources" were actually three sources all entered in one FTW text
box, so I have to split the one source into three!

Personally, I have found going back over my data and my "sources" very
rewarding.
I use a laptop and a desktop side by side to do it on rainy days and do only
ten or twenty at a sitting.
