Hi Don,
I'm interested in how others are doing this, because I was a bit baffled as
to how best to handle it.

What I did was create a new source that is an Electronic image, private
files, and named it the name of the person who I received it from. The
source type was GEDCOM (or database), and the author and compiler are also
the name of the person who I received it from. The date is the date of the
file. I listed myself and the person who I received the file from as the
repository. I left the surety as 1, because as you pointed out, the only
thing you know is who you got the data from, but you do not have
documentation of their sources.

You could just create a generic source called GEDCOM, and use that for every
one, but having each one with the submitter's name helps me to remember just
who I received it from.
