You are quite right, Bob. I was looking through microfilm of the Kingfield,
Maine town clerk's ledger book (1816-1850) and there are all sorts of entries in
it from payments to the town poor to marriages that have already occurred
between Kingfield residents and out of towners to intentions between townies.
Any resemblance to a real marriage date are purely coincidental. :^}
Occasionally, it is not clear if the marriage occurred in Kingfield or somewhere
else. It is even not certain if the entry is an intention or a report of a
marriage that previously occurred, if the clerk used fancy, stilted language.
Sometimes the actual marriage dates and the intentions are several months apart.
I've found intentions in more than one town...for the same couple. It really
gives my sources and memos a good workout. :^}
