Bob,
There were marriage licenses required before 1840 in some locations. It
depended on the marriage laws of the various states. There were marriage
*bonds* required in many states during the Colonial period, but not always.
There were some years in Virginia, for example, when bonds were not required.
In South Carolina, no licenses, bonds, or anything was required for a
marriage until the 1900's.
