Hugh, First, go to your library and get some books on resarching your
family. Second, find your nearest Family History Center and visit it and
find what resources it has. Third, you are lucky in having the Canadian
Archives around the corner.
Reur specific questions. From the census, if this is a new person, I
would enter a birth tag with a birth date of about 1798 (1870 - 72 years
as more likely, 3 times, for him to be 72 in 1870 rather than 1871), a
state or country ( I use state for England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland) of
Ireland and a surety for both of 1.
I then enter a census tag with date of 31 Mar 1871, City: Williamsburg
Twp, County: Dundas County, State ON or Ontario and Country, leave blank
for you. In the memo I put Religion, Occupation ( what is F?)
Ethnicity and other information I want to record.
My citation is the 1871 Canada Census and the District, Sub District,
Dwelling Number and Family Number in the Citation Detail. You may want
to make each Province have its own source but I have not found it
necessary and the location information in the census tag shows that.
If John lived with his wife, I put her as Principal 2, entering a birth
tag for her also. Anyone else living with them I make a witness to the
tag.
I use a surety of 3,3 2,3,3. I use a surety of 2 for the date as I like
to use the actual enmeration date if I know it. then I would use a 3.
My census tag reads [P] <|and [PO]> appeared in the census <[D]> <at
[L]> <|and [WO] were in the household>. <[M]>. If I don't want to print
the memo info there are a couple of ways of doing it.
The witness sentence is [W] was enumerated with [P] <and [PO]> <[D]>
<[L]>
The above is my way of doing it. You will get suggestions to use a
census person, to have only the Head of Household as a principal, etc.
You will have to evaluate each suggestions. Mine is easy, gives a nice
journal report and takes the least amount of file space.
You can add an occupation tag and a religion tag. I used to add the
occupation tag but now find having it in the memo is just as good. I
have never used the religion tag but would use it if I wanted to record
a change.
If you are adding children, in-laws and gradchildre, use a 2 for the
name/relationship tags.
I hope I haven't confused you.
