I have run into this same challenge and the road I took and the
road you will take are not acceptable; both will be a bit short of
what we need.

Now, the pick list is supported by "Name-variation" where several
names will get for you the same individual's record.

That is what we need here, a "source index variation". We need
for a source entry to be identifiable by more than one index entry.
For example, we need source entry 221 to be found under
abbreviation "Wagner, Marilyn", "Schulteis, Marilyn",
"Schulteis-Wagner, Marilyn", ... I don't see this requirement being
limited to just people names.
