I think this depends a bit on how difficult your line is to trace. If you
have a straight forward well documented line, (such as my husband's French
Canadian line) then perhaps you don't need all the extra people, but if you
are tracing more elusive ancestors it is often mandatory that you trace their
relatives, associates and neighbors. The ability to do this was the primary
reason I bought TMG.
I am still in search for any information regarding my great-great-grandfather
Daniel Higgins who had the audacity to die at the age of 24 before filing
naturalization papers. I am trying to find his birth county in Ireland by
tracing the people he lived with and the godparents of his children.
