What do you recommend for the GEDCOM type instead? (I realize it would
vary, but...)

few custom tags. Much later we learned that when you do a GEDCOM to a
cousin, the tags of the GEDCOM type NOTE do not include date or place
information!!! This is part of the GEDCOM definition for NOTE. Needless to
say most of our custom tags were set to the GEDCOM type NOTE.
