I'm not sure how off-topic this subject really is. Family histories
often are fully book-length and dense (in the sense of lots of factual
material per page.) Surely everyone who has had occasion to consult them
has noticed that some are more appealing and easier to read than others.
There are obviously many factors involved, but if you want your book to
actually be read, it's sensible to pay some attention to its design and
typography.
I'm afraid I may have contributed more heat than light to the
discussion, but I do think it has been worthwhile on the whole.
