Almost as soon as I posted the description of my picture cataloging
idea, we left for a long weekend trip. It was great fun to find the
discussion it generated when we returned, but it has made me late in
responding.
Jeff Owens pointed out that it wouldn't be wise to use person ID numbers
to catalog the pictures if you might change them. He's right, of course.
For myself, after many grandiose ideas about numbering persons in my
database, have given up and don't intend to change the ID numbers. If I
ever change my mind, I'll have to remember to change the picture numbers
too. It might be wiser to provide a unique unchanging number to each person
in the reference field which could be attached to pictures and any other
item referring to the person. But for me, the ID number already is that.
Richard Brogger has his own numbering system in place and could certainly
use it for his pictures and memorabilia. I started trying to use the Henry
System for my database some years ago, but gave up when I realized it had no
real utility for me and I could never remember its various requirements. As
with so many things in TMG, you can adjust numbering to suit your own
methods and needs. The point of the cataloging attached to the database is
that a connection is made so that you know a picture exists and where it is.
How you do it is an individual decision.
Pat Ricketts has mentioned some of the problems of storing pictures
electronically. I have too many to store internally, and don't want to use
up as much of my hard drive as it would take to store them externally. Also
I don't believe exhibits show up on the person view. I don't yet have a CD
writer, so that option isn't feasible now. I am puzzled about Pat's and
Lee's reference to using < > around the memo field to bring the pics into a
word processor? Still another item to learn about TMG.
Lastly, Lillian Cain asked me if I created a separate data base for the
pictures? No, I think it's valuable to have the info incorporated with
everything else. But you could use a separate database if it suited your
purpose.
Thanks for the great feedback! Fran Clark
