Teresa,
Pure genealogy is uninterested in any relationship that does not
produce children, i.e. a same sex relationship. A family historian
will include that other individual as a part of the total landscape of
the family. If you knew Bernie, for instance, you would know his
friend Mark as well. They were always together. And though Bernie and
Mark never had children, Bernie was a part of the family and to
exclude Mark is to exclude a part of the family.
Same sex relationships are at the extreme. At the more moderate places
in the scene are my half-brothers or even my step siblings. A family
historian includes all of them in the landscape of the family. A pure
genealogist says that they may be interesting relationships but not of
any importance to the ancestral and/or descendency issues of
genealogy. I admit that I am more a family historian than a pure
genealogist. What is of importance to our discussion is that people
who have different views will tend to disagree on things. And that is
okay. We don't all have to agree.
