Hi John,

My last version of FTM was 7.0 and the main difference that caused a
problem was the addition of Alternate names. When alternate names in
7.0 were saved in 6.x they became name facts but they did import into
TMG as Nam-var as they should. However, another person reported that
his imported as "Namesake" names and he had to change them by hand. I
think he used the wrong GenBridge settings.

My opinion is that you will have little to gain by waiting for v5.0.
All indications are that it will have a host of nice features but data
conversion is one area that may not reflect as much change in the first
release. Even if it does, neither GenBridge or TMG can fix what is
lacking in FTM. TMG has many more options than FTM and if you use them,
you will have to use your time and brain to make your imported file fit
with the expanded choices in TMG. In my opinion, the sooner you start,
the sooner you will be able to use TMG. When v5.0 arrives, you will
have your files in v4.0a and I feel it is safe to say that conversion
will be easy.

Regardless of what version you start with, you will have two problems.
You will have to unlearn your present way of doing things and learn new
ways in TMG plus you have to fix your files so they are right. Neither
task is simple but the rewards make it worth the effort. I got TMG in
February and I am still a beginner, still learning and still cleaning up
files. As someone stated, TMG will humble the new user, but I am now at
the point that I am doing things I could only wish for before and I find
that is a real joy that makes it all worthwhile.
