For those who haven't noticed, the latest version of John Cardinal's
TMG Utility allows you to change the Reference field contents using
the Utility's Set Person Field section. This allows the Reference
field to be changed for a specified group of individuals with the new
values coming from a simple external data file. You can also globally
clear the Reference field. The Set Person Field features are described

The ability to change the Reference field is a capability asked about
on this list literally dozens of times over the years. Now you can do
it.
