Grace,
<< Not only were they frequently relatives, but if I notice names appearing
frequently in many documents I consider them clues to unknown extended
family.>>
I do, too. I have found that tracking the neighbors, witnesses, etc., has led
me proving my own lineages in a state/place in which my ancestors previously
lived.
<< I have now started a 'signature collection' (if I can find one) to try to
keep records straight. I also keep the land descriptions as precise as I can
to aid this process.>>
I set up a Tag called Signature so that I can record in TMG how a person
signed their name. Of course, at the times when spelling was not uniform, I
have several people in lateral lines who signed their name more than one way
during their lifetimes. In this case, I record both. I eventually will scan
signatures into these Signature tags as exhibits
I believe that it is critical to record all details of land descriptions,
especially the metes and bounds descriptions and all of the neighbors. I also
have to do backward and forward deed searches on my ancestors' neighbors, as
well as on my ancestors.
