Since TMG can only "see" the first few characters of a file name when
importing, I have chosen the following process.
First, I name the file xNNNNN Surname GivenName YYMMDD.jpg (or TIF or
whatever).
the X is P for Portrait of an individual, F for family picture, S for
gravestone and M for Miscellaneous.
The NNNNN is the record number of the principal individual involved (I
don't ever expect to have more than 99,9999 individuals in my TMG data
base). The YYMMDD is the date the picture was taken, sometimes just the
YYYY or even ca YYYY for an estimated date.
Next, I copy that file to an "all images" directory and strip out the
xNNNNN part so that in the all images directory I have a list of pictures
by surname. Since I have a digital camera and there are a lot of pictures I
have that have almost no genealogical relationship that directory has a lot
in it.
When I look in the original directory using TMG to link a picture I find it
shown as xNNNNN~1.jpg or tif or whatever, and since I also have the
individual screen showing at picture selection time I can see the
individual's number on it an make sure I get the right one.
