I believe this has been covered before, so in addition to giving you an
answer myself, be sure to search the archives.
I do two things. First, I liberally use folders, so in my Photos directory,
I have a folder for Ash, for Rhinehart, for Bassett, for House Addition, for
Ham Radio, etc. The folders help sort things. Then in naming the actual
photos, I *do* take advantage of long file names. I start out with the date
I took or scanned the picture, followed by names. Using the date gives you
more uses of "billybob" besides numbering.
Some actual examples of my picture names that are in my Bassett folder:
2k0820-bassettfamily.jpg
2k0820-bassettfamily2.jpg
2k0820-david3months.jpg
2k0820-mabelmattedwingertrude.jpg
2k0820-mabelzellaorivagertruderoyedwin.jpg
2k0820-mattmabelmyrtadelbertmargedeletc.jpg
Note that my date is 2k0820 meaning that I scanned the pictures on 20 Aug
2000 - 2k = 2000, then 08 month, 20 day. They will then sort in date order.
Next year Aug 20 would be 210820. This year I could have used 20 instead of
2k.
My exception to using the date of scanning or taking of the digital picture,
is if I know the date the photo was actually taken. Example:
1999school-davidblauert.jpg (my nephew's 1999 school year picture)
1946EleanorGlamour.JPG
1966MamMa.JPG
MamMaYoung.jpg (this one, I will rename after figuring out about what year
taken and I will change it to something like
1910circaMamMaYoung.jpg
Hope this helps with one idea!
