I agree with Jeff's above statements. Some time ago I had a picture
numbering system based on initials and TMG ID#. Here are some thoughts I
noted while deciding on whether to change my system:

Currently in use: initials plus TMG ID.
plus: easy to locate by initials and present Anderson dataset ID

minus: Can't easily renumber TMG ID
TMG ID not the same for different datasets
Can't use initials for unknown subjects
Group photos have to go under the initials and ID of one
person,
or different photo ID
Non-person photos, such as houses, need different ID system

From the above, it looked like I did need a new photo ID system separate from
TMG/initial ID. Since I was already numbering documents such as old letters
with a simple numbering system (101 - 300 for prior to 1900, 301 - 500 for
1900 to 1925, 501 and up for after 1925), I decided to continue that system
for photos, starting at 2001. I then refined it slightly by assigning 2001 -
2100 for generations older than my grandparents, 2101 - 2500 for my
grandparents generation, 2501 - 3000 for parents' generation, 3001 for later.
I keep indexes to list details. In the case of the documents, the index
lists box#, folder#, date if known, whether transcribed or copied, and a
description. The photos have a similar index, listing new ID, old ID,
surname, given name/description/comments. So far I've only applied the new
index system to digitized photos, not yet getting my files ready for filing
the hard copy photos in archival storage.
