I just did a sample GEDCOM export, with 'supress information' checked, and
the information on living individuals did not appear. Some information
does appear - the person's name, her spouse, parents, children, etc. Dates
of birth and marriage do not appear.

The following is a name structure (my ggg grandfather) straight from a
GEDCOM file, indented for clarity:
0 @I120@ INDI
1 NAME Captain James/Farr/Jr
2 GIVN James
2 SURN Farr
2 NPFX Captain
2 NSFX Jr
2 SOUR @S61@
Not all programs will produce the '2' level structure; in fact, in TMG you
have to select Name NPFX/NSFX on the 'Options' tab of a GEDCOM export
report. Note, however, that the surname is enclosed in // in the 1 NAME
line; this should occur in all GEDCOM files.
Which leads me to: examine the GEDCOM file in Notepad or Wordpad (GEDCOMs
are plain text) and see how the names are given. I'm just guessing, but it
might be:
1 NAME den Berg, Jan van
and TMG, lacking other information, is assuming that the last element is
the surname.
Check for the // around the surname. If your correspondent's program
doesn't produce them, you could go through and enter them manually,
rearranging the name as necessary. I realize that isn't an overly amusing
thought, but using search (search for 1 NAME) it shouldn't be *too* bad,
especially if you achieve the result you want.
Remember - if you're using Wordpad, make sure that when you save, you save
the file as plain text.
