You have noted one of the main reasons for using Mills. The other is to
conform to the current "standard". That "standard" is somewhat defacto and
somewhat published depending on your situation. In most cases (including
e-cases), Lackey does fine. So you can continue without any qualms in most
cases. However, Mills is now the standard used by most national and large
regional societies and other genealogical authorities. So if you were to
submit papers to the National Genealogical Society Quarterly (for example),
it would be best to conform to Mills (especially since she is a co-editor
of the Quarterly <g>). Similarly, submissions to the Board for
Certification of Genealogists should conform to Mills. OTOH, if you have
no such plans, again Lackey is fine.
One other thing to keep in mind is that there are other differences
(besides e-sources) between Mills and Lackey. Most of these are subtle and
many of no real consequence. Although some others are a little more
noticeable. For example, order of information in Bibliographic entries is
different partly to allow different sorting of the Bibliography.
Still as Ms Mills indicated here, her examples are really just models.
Being such, there are often situations where her models are not warranted
and you have to go you own way. So while I would recommend the Mills
models (or custom based on Mills) and generally use them myself, there is
no reason why Lackey can't be used.
Hope this helps -
