Lillian - For labeling the back of your pictures, I would recommend that you
use an archival quality gold metallic pen. Silver doesn't read very well
and pencil has a tendency to rub off. My husband is a fairly serious
photographer (recently won $500 in a competition) and is a fanatic about
organizing all of his photos, slides, and negatives. This is what he uses
extensively. With the popularity of scrapbooking, you should be able to
find one of these pens quite easily. I have seen them at Office Depot and
craft stores as well. Hubby uses Pilot Gold Markers. Just make sure they
have dried well before stacking another photo on top.
If you have proof sheets made from the negatives, then it is a simple matter
to keep the proof sheets in archival jackets in a notebook. You can keep
the negatives in archival negative sleeves immediately behind the proof
sheets and keep the photos in a separate manner (archival boxes with
indexes, sleeves, etc.). You could create a sheet to accompany each proof
sheet that identifies the photos in the manner you decide (family, location,
individual, or any combination thereof). You could tell at a glance what
the subject of each proof photo is. Then you could cross reference them in
a database (including your TMG), Clooz, Access, or even by using a plain old
table in your wordprocessor (you can use the sort feature to find and
cluster subjects).
