TMG does and would not automatically put anything in the reference field,
at least I hope not. The reference field is used for different things by
different users and just dumping something in there automatically could
potentially wipe out what a user had put in there.
I just merge two individuals this evening. I went back and look at the
results and there is nothing that indicates that it was merged. The last
edited date was not even changed. The best solution for now would be to
create a flag indicating that a merge and set it for the individual each
time a merge is performed. Maybe in the future TMG can set something
automatically.
