Does anybody else file source material by TMG source number? You have to
avoid the mass renumbering. If you screw up then your TMG backup is your
security.
When I need to find my source material, I use a printed cross reference
master list or just look it up in TMG. I have a list in Title order and
another in Abbreviation order. Most of my source material is in loose
leaf binders. If the material is particularly bulky like grandpa's
military pension file, then I file location notes in the binder. The
notes will reference an assigned number in my file cabinets.
I have one source for a particular set of church records that is cited
hundreds of times. The CD field is used for reference information to
distinguish each citation. Thus this one TMG Source will produce many
separate Report Sources. If I need to review my sixty pages of copies
for this source they are all in one place.
When you file by a particular couple or surname then the material for one
source could be in many different files and not easily reviewed as a
whole. Having all the information extracted from a particular TMG Source
easily accessible allows me to review the source at the library or
courthouse and avoid making copies of material that I already have.
Every filing system has exceptions. My correspondence files are separate
and in alphabetic order by sender - (actually they are in stacks in my
office but I intend to eventually file them). My census copies are by
year then state then county in a separate file folder
The system seems to works for me.
