My use of the TMG Source number is not to find the source document. itself.
Instead I use it to find the Source in my dataset when I already have the
document "in hand" -- that is, I use the Source number as a cross-reference
only back to TMG. I file my documents by surname (with cross-reference
sheets pointing to the actual location when more than one surname is
involved) in chronological order.
As for the Tools=>Master Source List=>Renumber All (Compress) option, that
(like many options -- including other ways than just TMG) should only be
used after careful consideration of the consequences. Once I have a
dataset where I make use of the Source number outside of the dataset, then
I (as a rule) don't used the option. But until then, I have no problem.
Matter of fact, I use it a lot during initial clean-up of a dataset.
