This is why I do not use generic sources, if by generic sources you
mean, for example, using a single source for something like "Book" and
then relying on the citation detail to know whether the book is
Huckleberry Finn or the History of Cache Valley Pioneers.
I physically file any document I want to keep in a looseleaf. If it
is an original I put it in those nice archival clear plastic covers
and insert into the cover a strip of paper showing the TMG source
number and title. If it is not an original I just punch holes and
label it and put it in. Of course, in TMG the item carries the same
source number. If such a source is a book or such, in TMG I also
reference the page number or other identifying detail in the Citation
Detail. I can easily print a table of contents by printing my Master
Source List.
I suppose, if you wanted to use more generic sources in TMG, you could
devise a way to file by source number and by a sub-number for the
specific item. For instance, if you had a single source for "e-mail"
in TMG as source number 3, you could physically file printouts of all
your e-mails as 3-1, 3-2 etc, and place the identifying info in your
citation detail. However, you would have to play around to see whether
you could generate any meaningful indexes or tables of contents in
TMG. Also, I think it would add unnecessary complexity.
