What I do (idea stolen from Sharon DeBartolo Carmack's Organizing Your
Family History, or whatever it is called) is file by surname and then for
each surname I have a separate file folder for type of document: births,
marriages, land records, probate, census, whatever, adding them only as
needed. That is, I start with a simple surname file--when I've accumulated
several documents, I divide them by type of document, and keep the surname
file for odds and ends relating to that surname. This works well for
me--I'm not methodical enough to put documents in a specific numerical
order, but I AM capable of at least sticking them into the right folders...
Best wishes,
Martha Grenzeback
