Having seen the demo given by Bob Velke of Family Tree SuperTools (FTST) at
least twice and heard his comments about what TMG v5 will have, I saw that
a TMG v4 user will feel very comfortable with FTST and TMG v5. I expect
you are right in that there _MAY_ be different ways of doing thing as
compared to TMG v4x. However, those would be additional features not
available in TMG v4x.
Bob has indicated that many of the new features planned for TMG v5.0 have
already been included in the updates to TMG v4.0 to v4x. Thus we are
already enjoying a lot of TMG v5, the major difference being a slightly
different interface. I say "slightly" because it will be very recognizable
to any TMG v4.x user. For that matter, a TMG-DOS user (and there are still
a few) would also recognize much of TMG v5.
So the remaining features TMG v5 that will be new to TMG v4x users may mean
that there might be new ways of doing things. However, I don't foresee a
great deal of difference in the fundamentals of TMG. I only see additional
features that we don't have now -- such as "automatic web searches" and
having more than one instance of TMG using the same dataset or different
datasets open at the same time either using a network or even on the same
computer. These would be naturally affect how the user(s) utilize TMG to
conduct their research. But it probably won't greatly affect how you enter
your data.
There may be some small changes in how your data is entered or stored. But
I really don't think there will be any big changes in TMG v5. One of the
things that any good programmer learns quickly is that the fewer changes to
data storage the better during a major revision of a program. So I don't
expect that data will be affected greatly now. Maybe in a later version if
there is a need.
Thus, I don't expect much of a change in how I do thing with v5 as compared
with v4x.
