Bob Velke provided the explanation for this behavior. It seems
that TMG interprets anything containing only letters and beginning with
"to" as an attempt to use a "from .. to .." date style. He also
cautioned against using any oddball dates beginning with "and.." or
"or.." which would also be treated similarly by TMG. Thus TMG accepts
"toothache" as an attempt at a "to" date but erases it and leaves the
Date field blank.
