Is there any means to have one program start another program or one
Icon open two programs so that going online would also start the
anti-virus program?
Not without scripting (which should be turned off!) or a third-party program
(I've seen them out there, can't remember their names, never used any so I
can't recommend one). This is the problem with not running the antivirus
program at all times -- you have to remember to run it before you do
whatever you consider "risky" business. Also, newer computer users forget
that these "script kiddie" e-mail viruses were not the first, nor the worst,
viruses -- long ago, virus writers were programmers who wrote in assembly
language and their creations lay dormant waiting to attack when least
expected -- they hid themselves from antivirus programs until their attack.
Someone is out there waiting to write a really nasty Windows virus that does
the same thing. This is why it is recommended you run the "realtime"
protection feature of your antivirus program -- not rely on only scanning
e-mail and online activity. Remember too that if you have a DSL or cable
connection to the Internet that you are ALWAYS online. If you are having
problems with your antivirus program apparently crashing your computer, AND
they do cause problems some times, check the vendors web site for any
recommendations for stabilizing the program. Norton, for example, has
several "knowledge base" articles on "optimizing" Norton Corporate
Edition -- "optimizing" is code for making it stable. But once these
instructions are implemented, it is pretty stable.
