Dale & Franz,
My Numbering System uses the Reference field in a very similar way.
I have a unique number for each ancestor, then number his/her descendants in
a similar way so that when I sort the Pick List on that field, all
descendants of that ancestor follow in a hierarchical order. Spouses,
in-laws, etc are identified suffix letters" H=husband, W2=second wife,
F=father, etc
