cantons are the next smaller units after the country of Switzerland.
Therefore, I use "state". County could be the Swiss "Bezirk", but these
do not have any interest for genealogical purposes. You might consider,
however, to record the "Buergerort"; that is the community where the
person has its origins and where you usually start your search in
Switzerland.

By the way, there are 2 half-cantons for Basel: Basel-Stadt (essentially
the city itself) and Basel-Landschaft (more or less the surroundings).
